Local nonprofit Catalyst Productions announces a benefit concert, to be held on Saturday night, at Charlottesville’s revered Jefferson Theater. The concert will benefit communities in the South Charleston area of West Virginia effected by the chemical spill. The spill left 300,000 people without safe, clean water. Catalyst Productions is seeking to raise money to continue relief efforts, in addition to raising awareness that the contamination problems have not yet been alleviated.

The concert will feature local favorites Dane Alderson Trio, performing at 7:30pm, followed by a set break performance by festival touring band After Jack at 8:30. At 9:00 Jon Stickley Trio will bring its custom sound to the stage at the Jefferson, welcoming audiences into their signature newgrass vibe. At 10:15 After Jack will again take the stage, keeping audiences warm for the arrival of Morgan O’Kane and his Current Band at 10:45. O’Kane returns to Charlottesville from New York, bringing his banjo-driven sound to round out the night. Doors open at 6:30.

Catalyst welcomes the partnership of Appalachian Voices in promoting this event. Appalachian Voices, with an office in Charlottesville, is a regional conservation nonprofit organization committed to protecting the Central and South Appalachian region, and is excited to join the Charlottesville community in responding in disaster relief for the South Charleston area. Proceeds from this event will go to provide bottled water, hygienic cleaning products, and non-perishable foods for communities in West Virginia that are still struggling to find water day by day. Showdown In The Hometown VI: Erin & The Wildfire vs. Major & The Monbacks

WHERE: The Jefferson Theater

WHEN: Saturday, February 8, 2014 – Doors 8:00 PM, Show 9:00 PM

TICKET PRICE: $5 Advance / $5 Day Of Show

Two local bands, only one can be at the top of the Charlottesville music scene, the 6th edition of Showdown In The Hometown features Erin & The Wildfire vs. Major & The Monbacks!

About Erin & The Wildfire: Erin & The Wildfire has been described as a “local treasure” and their presence continues to grow in Central Virginia. The band met in undergrad at the University of Virginia and have been expanding in the Charlottesville music scene ever since. Erin & The Wildfire released their debut self-titled EP “Erin & The Wildfire,” which features tasty original tunes with well-crafted lyrics and melodic balance. One of the songs, “Best I’ve Ever Been” was also chosen as one of the best songs of the year by WRNR Radio’s LocalMotive Best of 2013. The combination of Lunsford’s soulful and striking vocals with the Wildfire’s groove and intensity provides for a blues and funk-fused performance.

About Major & The Monbacks: Major and the Monbacks are the newest torch bearers of the old “Norfolk Sound”, following a long line of musicians with a sound that bridges the gap between the R&B of Gary U.S. Bonds, the rockabilly of Gene Vincent, and the modern garage pop of Dr. Dog to create an exciting brew of rock n’ soul. With 4 vocalists, a hypeman, and a lively horn section, the Monbacks have revived the party infused energy of southern soul, blending this old school style with danceable pop melodies and ska and soul horn riffs, stirring dreamlike visions of Otis Redding or Chuck Berry playing a beer soaked fraternity party.

Stand for those things in which you truly, passionately believe to the depth of your core: the integrity of your work, the way you choose to do business, the people with whom you surround yourself. How and where you live your life.

Harder to live up to when the compromises of career and adulthood come calling. Which makes The Infamous Stringdusters’ insistence on living out those hard choices — and taking control of their own business — all the more remarkable. As is the constant, relentless, revelatory evolution of their music.

Pick-ups, in-ear monitors, lighting effects. Start there, for this is an acoustic band, right? Their live show isn’t a concert, it’s a performance, their music flirting constantly with risk and reward, the grip of the moment taking them way beyond the barriers of bluegrass, way out of that safe harbor where they began and into the deep waters of inspiration and innovation. And they’re only beginning to grapple with the possibilities of all this freedom.

For Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, 2013 became a year of unforeseen challenges and transformations. Three months before the original scheduled release of the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio record, Give the People What They Want, Sharon Jones, the lead singer and matriarch of the worlds’ #1 live soul act, was diagnosed with cancer. What was projected to be a hectic and exciting year of worldwide touring was quickly taken over by hospital rooms, doctors, and many unknowns. At 57, Jones has lived through her fair share of hardships and heartbreak, but being separated from the stage and her fans has proven to be the most difficult challenge yet.

Thanks to an extremely gifted medical staff, several months of recovery and the infinite love and support from friends, family and fans, Sharon is back, ready to once again join her Dap-Kings as they share their music with people around the globe. “My fans are what kept me fighting, and kept me focused on getting better,” Jones says. “Everything I love can be summed up by the moment I get on stage, and start giving the people what they want. That’s real love. That’s real music.”

About Moon Taxi: For the members of Moon Taxi, their third album, Mountains Beaches Cities, represents the idea of exploration – searching both the world and themselves for new experiences. The Nashville rock group, who had honed in on a notably compelling aesthetic with their previous album Cabaret, focused on extending the sonic landscape they’d created in earlier recordings, but this time around they amp up the speed and turn up the volume – creating an overall bigger sound.
The album was self-produced by Moon Taxi’s own guitarist Spencer Thomson with the help of keyboardist Wes Bailey and was mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, The Dead Weather) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Talking Heads, Paul Simon, Fleet Foxes).

About The Revivalists: Since forming in 2007, The Revivalists have rightfully earned their reputation as the next breakout band from the music capital of New Orleans. The group’s blend of soulful, syncopated rock and earnest songwriting comes to life through a meticulously crafted and ever-evolving live performance. In 2011 they were named Best Emerging Artist at Gambit Magazine’s Big Easy Awards, and were nominated for Best Rock Act in 2012.
