SPRINT PAVILION TO UNDERGO CONSTRUCTION
Replacement of original fabric roof to start November 1st
(Charlottesville) The Sprint Pavilion will be undergoing construction this winter to replace the original fabric roof. This work will involve shutting off pedestrian access thru the venue during the construction period from the first of November through late March of 2019. Access to and from Water Street, through the tunnel under 9th Street, will be closed completely during this period. Pedestrians will need to use Water Street to the Transit Center or Market Street to 7th Street as alternate routes to and from the Mall. The entire Mall, the ramp from the Mall to the Belmont Bridge, and all streets around the venue will remain open during this process which will minimize any impact on people accessing City Hall, the Visitors Center, and all the businesses on the east end of the Mall.
Installed in 2005, the original fabric of the roof has served us well but is nearing the end of its useful life for us. We do have plans to recycle as much of the fabric as possible. Some sections will be used locally while the majority of the fabric is being donated to a project to create Portable Off-Grid Washing Facilities to be deployed to refugee camps around the world. See more at the end of this release for the details. We are happy to support this work and hope that the donated fabric can continue serving people in need around the world.
We are happy to welcome back Martin Horn as the general contractor for this construction process. We will also be utilizing Dunn Lightweight Architecture, from Mexico, as the architect, engineers, and installers of the new roof. Weather permitting, the project will finish up in March. The roof will be identical to the existing one but with a new fabric shell and acoustic treatments that should last the next 20 years.

Charlottesville’s Sprint Pavilion’s fabric roof will get a new life, transforming into the outer skin of a Portable Off-Grid Washing Facility (POWF). POWF is an autonomous, portable, reusable structure that is easily built, packaged, storable and portable. POWF creates a reusable, environmentally- sound method for cleaning clothing and bedding in the chaotic, unsanitary conditions of the 21st- century refugee/displaced peoples’ camps proliferating around the globe.
Cleanliness creates the enzymatic effect that improves the temporary camp situation on many levels. Once water sources are hooked up, POWF is to ameliorate the dire situation of the modern displaced person/refugee in a permanent, effective, and empowering way by restoring their basic human dignity with simple, efficient sanitation under challenging circumstances, using a modular solar-powered washing station, once water sources are hooked up.
By utilizing a fusion of current high-tech and low-tech technology: solar energy, solar water heating, improved battery technology, engineered bamboo, modern greywater filtration applications that fertilize date palm or banana tree groves, including charging stations and WiFi, the POWF becomes a physical and psychological oasis.
Bert Muhleman is a Charlottesville native and 1989 graduate of UVA, currently studying
Landscape Planning at CZU in Prague, Czech Republic, who attended many outstanding shows at the Pavilion and looks forward to re-using it to create better conditions for the victims of disaster.
