Why Charlottesville? How a Facebook comment, an unknown blogger, and some old tweets inflamed a debate about race and monuments

On October 4 last year the Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia hosted a free event featuring Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza, for which local best-selling author John Grisham was the emcee. There was a packed house for the event, “Rooting Out Injustice: Poverty, Race and the Role of Legal Aid,” and Garza got the kind of welcome you’d expect in a liberal town like Charlottesville. She spoke about combating the concept of white supremacy and how institutional racism affects people of color in our justice and educational systems.

At the time, if you told people in Charlottesville that hundreds of angry white supremacists and neo-nazis would rally in a park just steps away from the theater the following summer, they’d have thought you were crazy. Read the rest of this entry »

UMDIn addition to simply watching the high-flying Hoos last regular season game, you could win a chance to feast at Rapture on the DTM!. Landmark Great Deals in Charlottesville is running a promotion you might want to participate in. Just 1) like them on Facebook, 2) enter your email at Landmark Great Deals in Charlottesville to receives notices about great deals, 3) then write your final score guess of the UVA vs UMD game this Sunday, March 9 in the comment section under Great Deals in Charlottesville’s Facebook post.

Prize: The closest guess to the final score will receive their choice of a $100 LGD credit, or $100 in dining at Rapture

Rules: Entries must be received before 12:00pm Eastern Time on March 9th. Any entries after will not be considered. You must guess the final score for both teams. If no one gets the score exactly correct the closest guess will be awarded the prize. If two or more entries are equally close to the final outcome, or are dead-on for the final score, we will draw a winner from those entries. The difference taken from each score will be considered when determining guess accuracy. Example: If the Final is UVA – 80 to UMD – 70 and your guess is UVA – 70 to UMD – 80, this will be considered off by 20 points. Edited entries will not be accepted. Only the first entry from each participant will be honored.

Take Back the Night rally begins on the DTM

It’s Take Back the Night week at UVA, and there will be a rally/march this Thursday, April 19 starting at the DTM Pavilion, which will end at the UVA Amphitheater for a candlelight vigil. Rally 6pm to 7:30pm, March 7:30pm to 8pm, vigil at 8pm. More info.
